London’s City University is ditching the name of John Cass from its prestigious business school due to the 17th century merchant’s links with the slave trade. The school was named after the trader in 2002 following a £5m donation from educational charity Sir John Cass Foundation, which has also “committed to a name change”. The school will be referred to as City's Business School pending consultations with staff, students and alumni on a new name. Several major UK businesses and the Bank of England have apologised for their historical roles in slavery.
